Earn Money for Our School!

Here's how:

·         Turn in BoxTops!  Each one earns 10¢ for our school, which adds up fast!  The collection box is in the school library.
·         We also collect Labels for Education, Tyson’s Project A+, and Cream o’ Weber lids!  Soda pop tabs do not benefit our school but we are happy to collect them and donate them to Primary Children’s on behalf of Sage Hills students.
·         Shop online!  Hundreds of stores participate in giving part of your purchase back to the school as e-BoxTops.  Apple Store, Best Buy, Groupon, Expedia, Marriot, FedEx Office, Land’s End, Lego, Lowe’s, Mixbook, Sea World, Sears, Southwest, Target, Toys R Us, Turbotax, and Walmart are a very few examples.  To earn from our school, create an account at http://www.boxtops4education.com/.  Then when you shop, start at that website and click on the store from there.  The store will put e-box top credit directly in our school’s account.
·         Shop at Smith’s!  We sent home a paper with a bar code that will link your Smith’s card to our school, and part of your purchase will go to Sage Hills.  Smith’s gave Sage Hills a $1,249.00 check for last year—WOW!  If you need another copy of the Smith’s bar code, please email Stephanie Watson at sdwalosi@gmail.com
The PTA is giving a couple rewards this year for box tops.  In the monthly newsletter you will find a BoxTops submission sheet.  Please include your family’s name and phone or email and turn in the sheets when they are filled up.  (Extra sheets will be in the library by the Box tops.)  Every month we will do a drawing from the completed sheets and the winning family will get a prize!  Also, if we reach our goal of $1,200 from box tops this year the PTA will give every class a popsicle party!  Our first drawing is on Monday, Oct. 28th,so turn in your boxtops by Friday Oct. 25th!

VALERIE ACKLEY- Author of "What Are You Thinking?"

Valerie lives in a beautiful valley near the base of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. She is married to Jeff Ackley and together they are raising five sons.  She graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Business Management and worked eight years in the telecommunications industry before becoming a full-time homemaker.  After gaining a better understanding of the effect thoughts have on every aspect of our lives, she had a strong desire to introduce these concepts to her sons. The idea for “What are You Thinking?” was born when she was unable to find a similar product for children.

Do your children know the POWER of their THOUGHTS? This fully illustrated, hard cover book introduces children to the concept that thoughts matter! Fun characters and humorous situations show that we tend to find what we are looking for, whether it is positive or negative. Your children will learn the importance of wisely selecting their dominant thoughts. FUN for ALL ages, “What are You Thinking?” will inspire creativity, confidence, goal setting, gratitude, and HOW to turn a bad day around! Parents can use this book as a spring board to discuss “thinking habits” with their children.  Award Winning Finalist in the Children’s ‘Mind/Body/Spirit’ category of the National Best Books 2009 Awards, sponsored by USA Book News!

BRENTON BARWICK- Author of "Defenders of Destiny" series

In Brenton's own words: I love to read. When I was a kid I consumed books almost as much as I consumed food. A high school teacher, Mr. Judd, encouraged me to write my own stories. I'll never forget the day he had me read my version of "Beowulf" in front of the whole class. That's when my love of reading began to evolve into a love of writing. My love of reading continued through college, where I earned a bachelor's degree in business. My writing creativity was revived by my son, Joseph, when he asked me to tell him stories as we drove to Grandma's house. I have always had a fascination with all things outer-space. Growing up in rural Herriman, Utah, I also developed a love for rock hounding, nature and the mountains, which I have passed on to my son Joseph; our adventures provided inspiration for the book. I wanted to write stories showing a family spending quality time together that would appeal to readers of all ages.

Joseph and his dad could never have imagined that their summer trip to the west desert in search of geodes would have interstellar ramifications. Was it simply chance that Joseph's pick struck the strange metal object, or could it be - destiny? Joseph, Sharianna, Mom and Dad, and their heroic dog, Percy find themselves accidentally hurled into space where they discover what NASA has been trying to cover up for more than half a century. When they attempt to return home they learn that their incredible adventure has just begun, as they plunge into the beautiful tropical waters of the Pacific in a frantic attempt to escape the competing, desperate, clutches of the world's superpowers. What unearthly mysteries, strange creatures, sunken ships and lost treasure wait to be discovered in the depths of earth's oceans? Can they ever return home? Will they become permanent citizens of the deep? Or must they flee to the infinite reaches of space?

Mr. Barwick recently came to Sage Hills and generously gave every 3rd-6th grade student a copy of his book!  He will be selling Book 2 for $5 at Hogwarts!  Our apologies--the $3 price was in error.

LEHUA PARKER--Author of "Niuhi Shark Saga" Series

Lehua Parker is originally from Hawaii and a graduate of The Kamehameha Schools and Brigham Young University. In addition to writing award-winning short fiction, poetry, and plays, she is the author of the Pacific literature MG/YA series the Niuhi Shark Saga published by Jolly Fish Press. One Boy, No Water and One Shark, No Swim are available now, book 3, One Fight, No Fist will be published in 2014.So far Lehua has been a live television director, a school teacher, a courseware manager, an instructional designer, a sports coach, a theater critic, a SCUBA instructor, a playwright, a web designer, a book editor, a mother, and a wife. She currently lives in Utah with her husband, two children, three cats, two dogs, six horses, and assorted chickens. During the snowy Utah winters she dreams about the beach.

11 year old Alexander Kaonakai Westin—Zader for short—is allergic to water. One drop on his skin sears like white-hot lava. Too bad a lifetime of carrying an umbrella and staying away from the beach isn’t the answer, especially when his popular almost twin brother Jay looks destined to become the next Hawaiian surfing sensation.

But avoiding water is just the tip of Zader’s troubles. Eating raw seafood and rare meat gives him strange dreams about a young girl in a red cape and nightmares about a man with too many teeth. There’s also the school bullies who want to make Zader their personal punching bag, the pressure of getting into Ridgemont Academy, and the mysterious yearly presents from his birth family that nobody talks about.

It’s enough to drive Zader crazy, especially when he suspects old Uncle Kahana and ‘Ilima know a secret that explains his unusual biological quirks. After all, they were the ones who found him newborn and abandoned on a reef and brought him to the Westins to adopt. Uncle Kahana swears Zader is ‘ohana—family—by blood as well as adoption. Too bad he’s not saying more.  When Jay quits surfing after a shark scare, Zader decides it’s time to stop hiding in the shadows and start searching for answers.

Growing up adopted in Hawai‘i just got a little weirder.

There’s something bugging adopted Zader Westin, something more troubling than his water allergies where one drop on his skin burns like hot lava. It’s bigger than his new obsession with knives, designing the new murals for the pavilion with Mr. Halpert, or dealing with Char Siu’s Lauele Girlz scotch tape makeover. Zader can’t stop thinking about a dream, the dream that might not have been a dream where Lē‘ia called him brother then jumped into the ocean and turned into a shark.  Zader’s got a lot of questions, not the least being why he’s hungry all the time, restless at night, and why he feels a constant itch on the back of his neck. It’s making him feel like teri chicken on a pūpū platter, but Zader doesn’t want to think about chicken, not with his growing compulsion to slip it down his throat—raw.

With Jay busy at surf camp and Uncle Kahana pretending nothing’s happening, Zader’s left alone to figure things out, including why someone—something—is stalking him before it’s too late.

Summer in Lauele Town, Hawaii just got a little more interesting.
