2012-2013 Battle Of the Books

 Many of you are familiar with Battle of the Books from experiencing it for the
first time this year.  It was so much fun that we are doing it again this next school year.   Included is a list of the books.  They are grouped by grade.
A recap on what Battle of the Books is:  students will get into teams and read the books on their grade level list.  They will have from now until March to read.  Then in March we will hold "battles" where teams compete against each other in a game style fashion and are asked questions about the books.  Points are given for correct title and correct author.  (Author's last name is acceptable.)
I won't have copies available until the new school year.  However, reading in the summer counts towards next school year's Battle of the Books.  So let's get started!!  Remember that you can read a book, have someone read it to you, listen to it on CD or Tape.  It doesn't matter where you get the book from - a library, a neighbor, a store, just get a hold of it and read.  Please do not use YouTube as a source.  Some of the reading on YouTube is not complete and you will miss part of the book.
Don't worry about not being on a team yet and what books to read.  Just read whatever you like and when you get on a team you will have an advantage - there will be more than one person on that team who has read the book.  Please call or email me if you have any questions. Thanks!  Mrs. Allen

Battle of the Books Volunteer Instructions

Volunteer:  Can be One person or a Team of 2 (One READS questions & One keeps TIME/SCORE)

Make sure no students have any papers, notes, books, etc.  Teams should all be empty-handed.
Have them sit with their teams.
Team listed FIRST on score sheet, is to be on your LEFT.  Team on LEFT = TEAM 1;
Team on RIGHT = TEAM 2;
Always say the team # before giving the question:           TEAM 1 - Question#1.  (then read the question)
Time begans AFTER question is read.  30 seconds or 10 seconds.
Track points for each question on colored sheet given.
*Time person will announce “5 seconds” – when 5 seconds is left – then “TIME” – loud enough for everyone to hear.  Then the person asking the question will then say “Team #__ do you have an answer for me?”  They must answer immediately.  Do not prod them or wait for them.  Then say – “Team #__, In What Book . . . (and re-read question to them) – you have ten seconds.”
(Say this all outloud to teams:)
Team on LEFT = ODD questions    Team on RIGHT = EVEN questions
Who is TEAM CAPTAIN?  Answers will only be given by captain.
Each team will get 30 seconds to answer – captain may give an answer BEFORE time is up – if you know both Title/Author – they may be given together.
Correct TITLE = 5 points/AUTHOR=2 points
If a TEAM cannot give correct answer, then the other TEAM is read the question again and given 10 seconds to give correct answer.
When no correct answer is given, no points are given – we will move on to the next question.
If a TEAM can only give correct TITLE, then the other TEAM is asked if they know the author of (TITLE) and is given 10 seconds to give correct AUTHOR.    If they CAN’T – then no one gets points for the Author.  Move on.
There are 10 questions.              GOOD LUCK!                                                                        (TO BEGIN:  Make sure TIME/SCORE person is ready . . . )
When BATTLE is over – give final score/have teams shake hands.
Please tell the team to go back to class, unless they are battling again or are battling during their class library time.
